St John Of God Hospital – Subiaco, Western Australia

St John of God Hospital, a busy hospital in the heart of Subiaco, was in need of a new Site Energy Plant as an emergency backup power supply. This would form a stable and redundant power supply for critical hospital infrastructure in case of a mains power failure. This project was based in Subiaco, near central Perth in Western Australia.
West Power Group was selected to provide the new Site Energy Plant. Our expertise in the complete scope of this project made us a reliable partner for every aspect of the entire power generation system, including turnkey design, supply, installation and commissioning.
As a busy hospital, avoiding any disruption to patients was a key requirement. While the construction and commissioning work of the new energy plant was undertaken, the hospital services needed to remain live and operational. The West Power Group team also had to find solutions to work around:
- Restricted spatial allowance.
- Low dBA requirements.
- The integration of fuel pipework within the building envelope.
- Co-ordination of airflow for cooling while meeting acoustic design.
- Design that allowed for the installation of a future third generator.
West Power Group delivered a compliant, reliable system to the hospital, drawing on years of expertise in design, engineering, and generator installation. The design was carefully reviewed and optimised to make more efficient use of the available plant space. This included selecting high-power-density, energy-efficient generators and relocating the cooling system to a rooftop plant area. This approach reduced spatial requirements and the cooling airflow, making it easier to meet the acoustic target of 72 dBA @ 1 metre.
This optimisation allowed for the integration of more compact acoustic attenuators and cooling fans. The bulk fuel storage tank was placed underground, freeing up basement space for other essential services. A comprehensive engineering portfolio was submitted for approval to ensure smooth integration during construction, while allowing other trades to continue modelling structural, seismic, acoustic, and electrical design elements without disruption.
Through careful engineering, value-managed design, and our coordination with stakeholders and other trades involved in the project, we delivered a reliable backup power system, ensuring all hospital services remained operational throughout construction and commissioning. The finished installation has provided St John of God Hospital with a future-ready solution, safeguarding its critical infrastructure and patient care for years to come.
